Milankovitch theory, maybe wrong after all?

Here is a preprint for our forthcoming chapter in the Encyclopedia of Climate System Science. Our perspective is that ice sheet, ocean circulation and global carbon cycle are critical to the development of ice ages, which are not simply caused by changes in Earth’s orbit as Milankovitch would have it.

I am looking to recruit a PhD student to work on seawater carbonate chemistry modeling and reconstruction of past changes in ocean acidity and atmospheric CO2. This project is aimed to improve our understanding of the role of the global carbon cycle in driving past climates. Please contact me for more details; general info on the UCSC graduate program in Earth and Planetary Sciences, and details on the application process.

The application deadline is January 3rd 2021 and the start date is Fall 2021.

We just published a study on nitrogen isotope evidence for a significant reduction in nutrient upwelling in the Southern Ocean during the last ice age. This work is based on model development Preston Kemeny and I did as part of his undergraduate thesis at Princeton. Well done Preston to come through and get your work published!
