Community principles

Our community was supposed to be based around three principles: equity, code and respect. Equity in that we realize that we are all learners looking for something. Code is central to the work we do and we look to advance it. Respect for each other and for each other’s feelings is what makes this community possible.

Inclusion

Each one of us carries a back story and is ultimately headed different ways. Personalities differ and that is probably for the better, too. Our community is open, we strive to include everyone that shows up, and we support each other as a matter of principle.

Respect and perspective

Humans historically struggle to agree to disagree and academia has never been an exception. Living and working then shall require respect for each other, each other’s differences. We want to exchange thoughts that differ to grow our perspective and we want to be treated with respect.

Code, decode

We always look to advance our mastery of digital workflows, open standards and learn new ways to communicate our thoughts into code. The key thing that brings us together is the need for better code to advance our goals and express ourselves. We are also looking to learn from each other’s successes, struggles and failures.

Purpose and belonging

We find purpose in studying our planet and wish to make a difference for the better. We also enjoy belonging to a group of like minded people. We are a community dedicated to learning and we care for each other. We recognize that our work would not be possible without others and it would be less fun without each other.
