Anja Studer just found the same N isotope signature in microfossil shells before and after the termination. We think its due to the biological carbon pump. Read the full story.

Terra Ganey will join us in the fall to work on seawater chemistry and the role it plays in the global carbon cycle. Welcome Terra, we look forward to you joining our Earth System Biogeochemistry learning community.
We used an inverse model to extract carbon cycle information from the novel stable strontium isotope record out of the Paytan lab, just published in Science.
I am looking to recruit a PhD student to work on seawater carbonate chemistry modeling and reconstruction of past changes in ocean acidity and atmospheric CO2. This project is aimed to improve our understanding of the role of the global carbon cycle in driving past climates. Please contact me for more details; general info on the UCSC graduate program in Earth and Planetary Sciences, and details on the application process.
The application deadline is January 3rd 2021 and the start date is Fall 2021.
We published a study in GRL highlighting the possibility of substantial geologic carbon release at the end of the last ice age.vv
We just published a study on the distribution of carbon in the surface ocean. This work is part of Yingxu Wu’s graduate research. Well done Yingxu to get your work published!
We just published a study on nitrogen isotope evidence for a significant reduction in nutrient upwelling in the Southern Ocean during the last ice age. This work is based on model development Preston Kemeny and I did as part of his undergraduate thesis at Princeton. Well done Preston to come through and get your work published!
Our study on the relationship between boron isotopes, pH change and CO2 climate forcing was just published in Paleoceanography and Paleoclimate.
Our paper on the impact of glacial meltwater on the ocean’s silicon inventory and isotopic composition was yes published in Nature Communications.
This summer I moved with my family from England to California to start a faculty position at UCSC Earth and Planetary Sciences. I am looking to build a research group that uses computational methods to reconstruct and quantify global carbon and nutrient cycling across Earth History. Please get in touch if you are interested PhD opportunities in my lab.
